Dear Overland Park City Council,

I’m frustrated with the city’s budgetary and management decisions that have led to pool closures and a degraded experience at the dwindling public pools in the city. The City claims limited budget is the reason for the current state of pools in the city; yet the Council just approved a $34 million project to remake the Farmers’ Market. The Aquatics budget is $1.65 million annually, and brings in $450k in revenue to help offset pool expenditures.

I’m asking you to please prioritize our pools. Neighborhood pools are important! Some of the issues I’d like to see addressed to bring us on par with neighboring suburbs:

  • Restore the 8pm closing time
  • Stop reducing the length of the pool season. Leave ALL pools open through Labor Day.
  • Bring back amenities that are a cornerstone of a kid’s summer pool experience: Reopen concession stands.
  • Revise the long-term strategy and prioritize maintaining neighborhood pools: Save Bluejacket!

If the city is struggling to find money in the budget to prioritize our pools, I propose they drastically curtail the boondoggle Farmers’ Market project and reallocate that money towards our public pools.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

A concerned OP resident
